Sketch On The Life Of Pat E. Harrell
Pat
Edwin Harrell was born July 11, 1930, at Lamesa, Texas. He was the
son of John Robert and Mary Francis (Medley) Harrell.
He
graduated from high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1948. He
attended the University of New Mexico in 1948-49. In 1950-52 he
attended Abilene Christian University where he received the B.A.
degree. Following his work at ACU he attended Harvard University
where he graduated with the S.T.B. degree in 1955. Next he attended
Boston University where he received the Th.D. degree in 1960. He
won first place in the Preaching Contest conducted at Harvard
Divinity School.
On
December 22, 1952, Pat Edwin Harrell married Miss Nancy Zenor. To
this union one son and three daughters were born. The son was named
Hilary Patrick. The daughters were named Holly Winn, Hildy Zenor.
and Heather Ruth.
Harrell began preaching in 1952 at Natick, Massachusetts. He
preached there for seven years while he was in Harvard and Boston
University. In 1959-61 he was chairman of the Bible Department in
Northeastern Christian College in Pennsylvania. He was minister of
the Herring Drive Church of Christ in Houston, Texas. 1962-71. In
1978 he was chairman of the Bible Chair at the University of Texas
in Austin. In 1978 he served as the "Teacher at the Institute for
Christian Studies. In 1971-75 he was Teacher of the Evening School
University of "Texas.
States in which he held meetings were Massachusetts, New Jersey,
Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico.
Harrell was a co-founder and former board member of the Restoration
Quarterly.
He
was chairman of the Association of Religious Teachers at the
University of Texas for two terms.
Harrell was Faculty Fellow of Andrews Hall. He wrote "Divorce and
Remarriage in the Early Church" and also authored a commentary on
Philippians.
An
endowed Chair was established in his memory at the Institute for
Christian Studies at the University Avenue Bible Chair on the Campus
of the University of Texas.
Pat
Edwin Harrell died December 25, 1978, at Austin, Texas. He was
survived by his wife, Nancy (Zenor); one son, Hilary Patrick; three
daughters, Mrs. Holly Winn Thurman, Mrs. Hildy Zenor Chandler, and
Mrs. Heather Ruth Harrell; four brothers, Ward Harrell, Joe Harrell,
Paul Harrell, Robert Harrell; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Campbell, Ruth
Harrell, Beth Stehwein and Mrs. Jean Blaylock.
Funeral service was conducted at the
University Avenue Church of Christ in Austin, Texas, with Dr. C. W.
Zenor, Dr. Claude Hocoll, Steve Spidell, and Lanny Henniger
officiating. Burial was in Austin, Texas, with interment in Capitol
Memorial Cemetery.

Grave Of P.E. Harrell
Pat E. Harrell is buried in
Austin, Texas in the Cook/Walden Capital Parks Memorial
Gardens Cemetery. From downtown Austin head north on I-35 and take
Exit 247 and continue north on the frontage Road. At the exit you
will see Memorial Hill Park Cemetery, however this is not the
cemetery you are looking for. Continue north on the frontage road
and the Capital Memorial Cemetery will be on your right. Pass the
Funeral home, and bear right on FM Road 1825. Enter the
cemetery to your right and take your first left. Note that Section
"H" is on your left and Section "B" is on your right. Follow Section
"B" around to the right. Now Section "G" is on your left and the
north end of "B" is on your right. Continue past Section "C" on your
right. Section "K" will begin on your left. Stop the car as you
reach the end of Section "C". Look into the cemetery to your left in
Section "K". Head toward the cross in the middle. Just SW of the
cross about three rows you will find the grave of Pat E. Harrell.
