T.J. Legg was born in Raleigh, Rush
County, Indiana April 12, 1849. He grew up on a farm and and was the oldest of
seven children. He was a responsible young man helping his family any way he
could. When his family moved to Miami Indian Reserve, in what is now Tipton
County, Indiana, he helped his father clear the land for the family's small
farm.
Thomas was educated in common schools and
through private tutors. He later attended New London Academy, Howard College and
Hall's Business College in Logansport, Indiana. He did work for the military
department in the mid 1860's on the Western plains and in the Rocky mountains,
where he did engineering and construction service.
According to Henry K. Shaw he became a
member of the church in 1869, however it was reported by William H. Book that he
was baptized by Jacob B. Blount, November 30, 1870. In 1871 he was married to
Elizabeth C. Johnson, on the fourth of July.
He started teaching school around 1870.
During this period of his life he also served a term in locomotive service on
the railroad. Following his teaching experience he traveled for eight years in
Indiana as an inspector and underwriter for fire insurance. As superintendent of
the Sunday school at Logansport he showed much ability in this field.
Has traveled extensively, visiting every
State and Territory in the Union, and making two journeys (1891 and 1895) to the
eastern hemisphere. He began service as State evangelist under the Indiana
Christian Sunday-school Association in 1872. He became Sunday school evangelist
in 1892 and spent the next twenty years with the Sunday School Association and
the State Society. He is credited with organizing 116 churches and holding
nearly 300 meetings as well as doing his regular job of holding and conducting
Sunday school rallies.

Have Gone Too Far) Go North On Dr. Martin Luther King Street. Turn Right
On West 32nd Street. Cemetery Will Be On Your Left. Go Until The Road
Dead Ends Into Boulevard And Turn Left. There Will Be An Entrance To The
Cemetery As You Cross The 34th Street Intersection. Turn Left Into The
Cemetery. Be Sure To Click On The Map for
