Robert Slaughter Usrey

1912-2001

The Life of R.S. Usrey

Robert Slaughter Usrey was born in Mayfield, Kentucky, September 29, 1912. He was married to Georgia Ruth Doron. They had two daughters, Bettie Jean and Mary Jane.

Baptized by Ira A. Douthitt in October, 1924, he began preaching in Farmington, in Graves County, Kentucky that same year. He received his education at the University of Cincinnati, Freed-Hardeman College, Florida Christian College, and Vanderbilt University Graduate School. At Vanderbilt he wrote on Biblical Sources of Ruskin’s Thought, and received his M.A. degree.

Brother Usrey preached for the Water Valley church of Christ in Kentucky from 1945-1950; the Bell City church of Christ in Farmington, Kentucky from 1948 to 1950, and the Cuba church of Christ in Mayfield, Kentucky; Green Plains church of Christ in Murray, Kentucky; and the Acklen Avenue church of Christ in Nashville, Tennessee.  

For a time he edited a religious paper called Tidings. He conducted radio broadcasts on WKTM in Mayfield, WPAD in Paducah, and WNBS in Murray, Kentucky.

Robert supported himself at times through the years as a manager of A & P Tea Company, and as superintendent of REA Electric Cooperative Corporation. While living in Nashville, for a time he taught in the Department of English at David Lipscomb College (now Lipscomb University) in Nashville.

He passed from this life October 22, 2001, and burial followed at the Lebanon church of Christ Cemetery at Sedaliah, Kentucky.

Directions To Grave

The Lebanon church of Christ Cemetery is located south of Mayfield, Kentucky about five miles on Hwy. 303. If heading south you will come to a four-way stop where you will see the church to your left. Turn left in front of the church building and head to the rear of the cemetery on the left-hand side of the road, at the rear (last row - 3rd marker from street)

Note: also buried in the cemetery are two other preachers. Just to the left of the Usrey plot is that of Winford and Molly Doron Claiborne, and a few rows back and a little to the right is that of Ira A. and Rega Rae Douthitt.
